BANDUNG, Jan 28 (Bernama) -- Malaysia and Indonesia can propel Asean to become the third economic force in Asia as they have advantageous factors in terms of both total population and development plans.
"Malaysia and Indonesia represent 44 percent of 600 million population in Asean. Asean becomes a region with rapid growth in creating middle income group.
"Our total GDP is 51 percent of Asean GDP which means Malaysia and Indonesia can play a role to propel Asean itself to become the third economic force in Asia," said Malaysia's Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Husni Mohamad Hanadzlah after opening the Malaysia-Indonesia Economic Seminar (SEMI 10) here Friday.
In the context of Malaysia, he said, the country was in the process to transform its economy from middle income to high income.
"This means we will shift our economic structure to an economy with high added value and based on creative and innovative values," he added.
Meanwhile, Indonesia was a country in the category of highly populated economy with the potential to have quite a big transitional development value and quite a big economies of scale, he said.
"If joint together, it will become a major concentration to Asean growth and Asean, meanwhile, has ties in Asean plus three. So, the potential to become the third economic force is quite high," he said.
Total trade between Malaysia and Indonesia up to October last year was US$12.1 billion in favour of Indonesia.
SEMI 10, themed "the Role of Malaysia and Indonesia In the Asean Economic Integration", is the second event organised by the Malaysia-Indonesia Journalists Friendship Alliance (ISWAMI).
The first was held in Kuala Lumpur in December 2009 and opened also by Ahmad Husni.
At Friday's event, Ahmad Husni witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding for a collaboration in business networking between Malaysian and Indonesian entrepreneurs and the pre-launch of ISWAMI's book titled "Wajah-Wajah Malaysia-Indonesia".
About 400 people took part in SEMI 10. They included senior journalists and entrepreneurs from both countries. Most of the entrepreneurs are involved in food and beverage, beauty and body care products, and textile and fashion.
Malaysian singer-turned-cosmetic-entrepreneur Datuk Siti Nurhaliza Tarudin was among the speakers.
