JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The government should take initiatives and increase its efforts to prevent the entry into the country of illegal imports, a chamber official said.
"The government should encourage production and protect home-made products by preventing the entry into the country of illegal products," Chief Adviser of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (kadin) Fahmi Idris said here on Thursday.
Fahmi Idris who is also a former industry minister was speaking to a discussion on the protection of domestic market from illegal products. In the meantime, an associate chairman of the Indonesian Textile Association (API), Mintardjo Halim, said the government should not only produce regulations on goods protection but must also assure the enforcement of the rules.
"Many regulations have been produced but the problem is who is to implement them. It would be meaningless if they are not implemented," he said.
He said however that there were certain regulations that had been implemented well and could prevent illegal imports such as the regulations on imports of certain goods, on labeling for import products and the Indonesian National Standard (SNI). Kadin deputy general chairman on trade Matsir Mansyur said the government should also increase campaigns on the use of domestically produced goods to protect domestic markets.
